RUSSIAN DOCKYARD beach, anchorage, historic monumnet & DASKALIO islet in POROS Featured

Russian Dockyard (or Rosikos Nafstathmos) is a very picturesque bay with golden sand and emerald waters. It is nested in a lush pine forest and is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches of Poros. It is usually less crowded than the other beaches of the island and is well protected from all winds. However, sometimes its waters are not very clear due to the numerous boats that anchor or sail all over the area.

The area is almost uninhabited and only a small cantina usually operates there during the summer (day time only), offering drinks and umbrellas for shade.

Opposite the Russian Dockyard is the picturesque islet of Daskalio with a tiny chapel.

The Russian Dockyard is located inside the large and safe canal of Poros, at 1,5km past Neorio beach and is connected with Poros Town (port) by bus, which departs every one hour. There is also a water-taxi service available.

HISTORY: The Russian Dockyard Bay is a famous historical site of Poros for it was the naval base of the Russian ships that came to assist the Greek Revolution against the Turks in 1821. The ruins of the Russian naval station, with warehouses and bakeries, still remain on the beach. The Russians kept this property until the 1900s. In 1989, the Russian Dockyard has been declared as a preserved historical monument due to its great architectural and historical interest.

ANCHORING INFO: The Russian Dockyard (or Daskalio bay) is one of the most popular anchorages in the Saronic Gulf, found just 1.4 n.m. NW of Poros Town (port). There are four coves in the area called Russian Bay. The main cove has the beautiful sandy beach, which usually has swimmers. The others do not have as nice beaches as the main one but they are usually empty and you can take lines on the shore.

The area is protected from all winds and offers an idyllic setting with emerald waters, golden sand and pine trees. However it is usually full of yachts and due to that, sometimes the waters are not very clear. Moreover there is frequent wash from the ferries and the other boats. In any case it is better to take a shore line to the rocks, for safety.

A small cantina operates during the summer (daytime only) but no other facilities are available. Regular bus connection with Poros Town- Port (every 1 hr), sea-taxi and regular taxi services are available. You can easily reach Poros port if you have a quite fast and reliable tender boat. Otherwise you will need to walk for about 75min, through a beautiful coastal road. Alternatively you may go to Neorion which is much closer and has many tavenras and a supermarket. Small jetties is provided for disembarcation.

HOLDING: Good. Sand and weed.
