ENAMEL & METALLURGY FACTORY BUILDING in KEA (TZIA)

The only Enamel Factory in Greece operated in Kea's port (Korissia) from 1927 until 1957 and played a major role in the local economy and social life. More than three hundred male and female workers used to work in this factory, which belonged to Ioannis Gleoudis. Initially it produced mainly domestic utensils and signs. In 1936 it started to produce helmets and canteens for the Greek army and between 1939 and 1941 it produced mortars. Those days, this factory along with the coal supply center in Koka helped a lot the local economy, at times when other Greek islands were destitute. Unfortunatelly the factory bancrupted in 1957 due to the changes in the post-war economic situation.

In 1991 it's building was characterized by the Greek state as a Monument that has to be preserved due to its contribution to the industrial history of Greece. Nowdays a team of the factory's ex-workes has founded an association named "Friends of the Enamel Factory Association" which protected some of the factory's instruments and tries to turn it into an Industrial Museum.

The imposing industrial building of the Enamel and Metallurgy factory lies in the valley of Korissia (Livadi) and  its smoke stack dominates the area.
