Frissiras Museum houses a collection of over 3,500 works that belong to the founder (Vlassis Frissiras) and hosts other Greek and international exhibitions by established or younger artists in a fertile discourse in the context of artistic and cultural developments in Europe.
Moreover, the various educational programmes, the art seminars and the evenings of music, poetry and prose are meant to make this venue into a living ‘cell’ of culture for Athens.
The Frissiras Museum, the only Museum for Contemporary European Painting in Greece, was inaugurated on November 27, 2000 by the President of the Republic Constantine Stefanopoulos and officially opened on December 4, 2000 by the Mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos.
It was founded by the Vlassis Frissiras family, which is also responsible of the administration of the foundation, which consists a non-profit origination. The collections comprise sections of paintings, drawings, sculptures and engravings by major European artists in constructive attempt to record trends, features and the philosophy of the anthropocentric European painting after 1940. Among the exhibits of the Museum are works by Hockney, Auerbach, Blake, Rustin, Andrea, Dado, Segui, Rego, Velickovic, Arroyo, Adami, Diamantopoulos, Moralis, Theofylaktopoulos, Botsoglou, Vyzantios, Christoforou and the younger Kirby, Howson, Corpet, Martinelli, Smith, Pasieka, Marrey, Missouras, Manzavinos, Daskalakis, Skoulakis, Patraskidis, Tataris, Mammel, Loutz, Bisky, Xiang, Goig.
The Museum;s collection includes more than 3.500 paintings. At the same time the Frissiras Museum organizes guided tours and educational programmes and hosts various cultural activities and concerts, at the atrium in building 3 and the open-air auditorium of building 7. The Café and the Art Shop are available for the visitors of the Frissiras Museum.
The building at 3, Monis Asteriou str is one of the first neoclassical houses of Athens. Was built in 1860 and restored to its original form with minor interior alterations by the Frissiras family in 1998-1999. Still preserves some of the architectural elements of its period like the internal yard and the glazed windows.
