SYROS Archaeological Museum - SYROS

The Museum of Syros is among the oldest archaeological museums of Greece. It was founded in 1834-35 and is accommodated today in the Municipal Palace of Ermoupolis, important monument, that was drawn by known architect E. Tsiller. The Museum of Syros, was initially founded as central protectoral the Cyclades, because Syros is the capital of prefecture. Later with the foundation of local Museums and in the other islands it was limited, from the dues of passed century, in the discoveries by Syros. They remained however in the Museum of Syros all discoveries had been imported in his collection from old, as lively from the Amorgos and the Kythnos, as well as small pieces from various other places (Aegina, Viotia etc). The more important however total of Museum constitutes the collection of discoveries from the settlement in the Halandriani, that is found in steep elevation in the means of Eastern coast of Syros, where were revealed important departments of fortification (in the place Kastri), ruins of residences, laboratories metal art and ceramics. This settlement is considered from more important the said Prekykladjkou of culture and is dated in the second half of the 3rd millennium (2400/2300-2100p.h.). Most of this discoveries, work ceramics and metals, emanate from the excavations of Archaeological Etaireis in the Halandriani, at which were revealed 600 roughly graves. In the Museum of Syros is exposed a small part, while most have been transported in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Afterwards the end of prehistoric season and until 8th century. they have found discoveries in the island that belongs in the mykinaika and geometrical years, which however they do not help we have a total picture for the life in Syros at this years. At the classic years (5th - 4th p.h.) Syros remained in the shade of neighbouring Delos, had however independent regime. In the Museum of Syros are presented also certain accidental discoveries from the island, few sculptures and signs. Most of this exhibits are dated in the Hellenistic season. Big interest presents even Egyptian status from black granite that given to the Museum. It depicts the priest Anchapi and is dated according to his sign 730 eg (22nd Dynasty).
