KIONI harbour and little beaches in ITHAKI Featured
Tiny cute peeble beaches with marvelous transparent turqouise waters, near the lovely traditional fishing village KIONI. Excellent landscape! Its among our favourites in Ionian Islands.....If you come by boat, you moor at the little port of Kioni, you swim at the sea and you eat at the few very good tavernas in Kioni. You will find some cozy cafe - bars.... They are all by the sea with excellent view. KIONI is one of our favourite spots in Greece! ....Kioni's harbour is very deep (12-15 m) and therefore a long chain on your anchor is required. Bottom is weedy with medium holding. The wind blows often here but as it's direction is usually from the key to the sea, it is quite safe. Your boat holds on the mooring ropes and uses your anchor to prevent swinging.....Kioni has many old traditional houses that are all built at the end of a small and safe bay. It was built in the sixteenth century by the inhabitants of the mountains surrounding it who had to have access to the sea.....Now it has 226 inhabitants and it is located 25 kilometres from Vathi (capital and port) and about 4 km from Frikes harbour (see separate listing). One of the sites to visit are the three derelict windmills at the entrance to the harbour.
The churches of Evagelistria and Agios Ioannis are decorated with fascinating frescoes, and the latter has an impressive wooden temple. At ‘Rouga’, the visitor can look at ruins of cyclopean walls. A rough battle was fought in this area in the middle of the seventeenth century amongst the inhabitants of the area and ruthless pirates leaving the locals as proud winners!
At Lotza one can also see the derelict house of the hero of the revolution, Karaiskaki.
There are many pretty beaches surrounding the village which offers themselves up for a good swim such as ‘Mavrona’, ‘Plakoutses’, ‘Katsikouli’, ‘Sarakinari’ and ‘Filiatro’.
The local fiestas take place on the 24th of June and 20th of July.
Kioni is a popular village but keeps its quality and peace. It offers facilities such as mini markets, rooms to let etc.
