ZOODOHOU PIGI Monastery in POROS
The Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi (18th century) is built on a verdant slope with nice view to the sea, at a picturesque and peaceful setting on the eastern side of Poros (4 km from town).
At the monastery's entrance there is a famous spring wich acording to religeon, has healing properties. The Archbishop of Athens Iakovos 2nd in 1720, was miraculously cured from lithiasis, after drinking from the spring's holy water and therefore founded the monastery.
In 1733. the Patriarch of Constantinopolis Paisios 2nd recognises it as a monastery under the Patriarch's jurisdiction and gave it many privilleges.
The Monastery's helped with financial, social and spiritual means the Greek Revolution War in 1821. Ioannis Kapodistrias (first governor of liberated Greece) as well as the knwon warriors Miaoulis, Tompazis, Apostolis, Boudouris, Drosinos, prayed there in order ot get strength from it.
Kapodistrias founded ther the first orphanage of the liberated Greek nation (in 1828). In 1830, the first Eclesiastic School, in the eastern wing of the Monastery, was also founded and the Monastery became a source of spiritual elevation.
The monastery is surrounded by tall walls with only one gate. There are alos found the family tomb of Tombazis,Apostolis and the Admiral Miaoulis (fron Hydra).
