First yacht in Damen's SeaXplorer range has been commissioned and is set for 2019 launch
Amels and its parent company Damen have announced the sale of the first yacht in the Damen SeaXplorer 65 range. The 65-metre was unveiled as a concept at the Monaco Yacht Show last year. Damen’s aim with the SeaXplorer 65 has been to create a no-compromise expedition yacht that also offers the kind of creature comforts guests expect aboard a modern superyacht. The shipyard teamed up with EYOS Expeditions, specialists in organising bespoke superyacht experiences off the beaten cruising track. “This is what we have been waiting for – a purpose-built, go-anywhere, globally capable luxury expedition yacht,” said Rob McCallum, founding partner of EYOS Expeditions, when the SeaXplorer concept was launched last year. Other yachts in the range are a 90-metre and a 100-metre.
Utilising the proven axe bow form that has been so successful on Damen’s superyacht support vessel series, as well as an ice-breaking stern, the 65 offers 40 days of autonomous cruising, and complies with the environmental and safety standards in the IMO Polar Code B category. She is scheduled for delivery in 2019. The exterior lines are by Azure Yacht Design and Naval Architecture. Inside, the yacht incorporates a ‘mudroom’ on the main deck, where you can ditch your polar gear before heading to the rest of the accommodation. Inside, the yacht has been designed to offer guests great views of the surroundings, while on a practical level the yacht will be specced to operate in polar and tropical waters.
“A number of experienced yachting clients had approached us about adapting Damen’s professional vessels, so we knew from them that there were simply no globally capable luxury explorer yachts out there,” says Rob Luijendijk, Amels managing director. “And that’s also what we heard from EYOS Expeditions, who have decades of experience in bespoke luxury expeditions to the wildest places on the planet. So that’s why Damen began developing the SeaXplorer.”
