We meet Captain Justin Holvik of the charter yacht Germania Nova to find out about his charter year
The 55.4-metre Germania Nova, built in steel at Factoria Naval de Marin in 2011, is a modern reinvention of the 1908 schooner Germania. There are, of course, all the creature comforts you’d ever want aboard this popular charter yacht. We’ve been meeting her captain, Justin Holvik, to find out what she has been up to.
What have you been up to?
“We have had a repeat charterer for our last two Christmas charters. Both these cruises covered the Islands from St Barths to the Tobago Keys. For Chinese New Year we had a very memorable charter where a lot of Krug champagne was drunk. On our last Atlantic crossing we were a thousand miles from shore when we found an abandoned dismasted yacht. The crew had already been airlifted off. We left it behind as we had a large low-pressure system approaching. In the summer we had two one-month charters that went very well – we had a small dog on board that was very well trained, and with frequent walks by the crew there were no mishaps. We have had three charters this season and had some amazing sails off the Tobago Keys and Martinique.”
Highlight of the year?
“Landing a 24kg Wahoo in front of the charter party while they were having breakfast in the lee of Dominica.”
Plans for 2016?
“We had a shipyard period in the spring for our five-year survey. There is quite a bit of interest already so it should be another great summer of sailing.”
Germania Nova sleeps ten guests and charters through Hill Robinson from €70,000 per week.
