LEFKADA Island: Why Visit - Description - Sailing/Tourist Guide - Photos Featured
Lefkada is a marvelous -quite big- verdant and mountainous island, with 21.000 habitants, which is connected with the mainland with a bridge. Even though it attracts thousands of visitors, it keeps its authenticity and its natural beauty. One will find pine forests and traditional villages along with many medium sized hotels, nice shops, bars, clubs and restaurants. Its main attractions are the amazing long beaches with the exquisite transparent turquoise waters and the stunning landscapes (Porto Katsiki, Egremni etc) and the paradise islets (such as Onassi's islet, Skorpios), which are famous all over the world.
Visitors have numerous things to do and beautiful mountainous or sea-side resorts and villages to visit in Lefkada (see highlights). They also have the choice between a more cosmopolitan and intense life, if they choose the capital (Lefkada) or Vassiliki and a more relaxed time in other picturesque villages (such as Ag. Nikitas and Sivota).
YACHTING IN LEFKADA
Many consider Lefkada as the most "yachting friendly" destination in Greece and this may be true, since it has numerous advantages:
- It has a marvelous organized marina, in the capital town, conveniently located near all the shops. Moreover it has three ports (some organized with facilites) such as Nydri, Sivota fishing village and Vassiliki.
- It is perfectly located in the middle of the Ionian sea and very close to numerous wonderful destinations (Ithaki, Meganisi, Kefallonia, Kalamos, Kastos, Preveza etc).
- Short trips to the eastern part at the marvelous beaches of Skorpios and Meganisi islets (which are possible with most wind conditions) will offer unforgettable experiences. A smaller boat or a rib is ideal for that kind of trips.
- Its location offers protection from almost every weather conditions.
- Weather is quite calm (as in all Ionian islands) and even if strong winds occur they do not last more than 2-3 days.
- Visitors may spend many days in Lefkada and still have numerous interesting things to do. A trip with a car in the mainland is highly recommended.
PROS:
- Some of the most beautiful spots of Lefkada are found in the western coast which does not have any cove for anchoring and has always swell (because itis open to the Adriatic sea). There are many famous beaches (such as Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma, which are very long and open) and the lovely fishing village Agios Nikitas. We consider them as some of the most beautiful places of the world, so you should not leave Lefkada without visiting them, even if you'll have to leave your yacht for 1-2 days and drive in order to get there. The trip in the marvelous forest with the stunning sea view from above will worth it!
- As in all Ionian Islands (and in contrast to Aegean), atmosphere is misty and summer rains may occur.
