ASPRI AMMOS beach at OTHONI ISLAND (north of KERKYRA) Featured
A marvellous "white" beach with magic crystal turquoise waters! A well kept "diamond" only for "connesseurs"!!! "Hot spot" for baters all over Europe, especially those travelling to Greece from Italy. Located at the cute yet tiny OTHONI island at the Northeastern part of Greece. One of the loveliest Greek beaches, that very few Greeks know, since Othoni itself is an quite unknown primitive island, relatively far from the Greek mainland. Othoni is quite far, even from Kerkyra.
The island is vulnerable to north winds but the "aspri ammos" beach is more beautiful with mild north winds, since it is protected on its southern part. Adriatic sea brings swell even when the weather is calm, so anchoring there shoud be preferred only when the weather is really calm.
Othoni is the biggest of the three islands in the complex in a long distance from Kerkyra and has only 150 inhabitants. It is located 14n.m. from it and very close to the shores of Albania.
Characteristics of this island are the impressive rocks and the numerous marine caves that are a pole of attraction for divers and offer unforgettable rows to visitors.
According to mythology Ottoni is identified as the legendary island of Calypso, the Muse that kept Odysseus prisoner for seven years. The Cave of Calypso, one of the most important sites of the island, makes the visitors' imagination rise for what Odysseus went through.
The main settlement of the island is Ammos. Here you will see the small port that boats anchor. Horio, Dafni, Kasimatika and Deletatika are some of the villages you will see while touring in the island. Othoni have about 150 permanent residents. There is a hotel, rooms to let and taverns that serve fresh fish and recipes of the local cuisine.
