Heesen's 70-metre flagship was a star of the Monaco Yacht Show and is set to turn heads at the Fort Lauderdale Show next month
Currently in the mid-Atlantic on her way to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show at a frugal 14 knots, Galactica Super Nova is proving to be an excellent cruising yacht, as well as a real performer when the after-burners go on: twin MTU main engines deliver over 10,000 horses for a fast cruise, while things really get going when the third engine and the Rolls-Royce booster jet kick in, delivering a stunning top speed of 30 knots.
That rather extraordinary speed is possible thanks to the clever all-aluminium hull form, developed by Van Oossanen & Associates. The slender beam of 11.9 metres and the bulbous bow help in cutting through the waves, while the after sections of the hull help manage the water flow along the sides.
You can see some similarities in the exterior styling of this yacht and her sister Galactic Star, a 65-metre launched in 2013 – particularly that curved, arching feature aft. The exterior of the 70-metre has been restyled by Espen Øino, and much emphasis has been put on the guest deck spaces. Sliding glass around the sundeck hub means guests can stay here even at higher speeds, while there is also a spectacular waterfall feature on the 6-metre pool aft on the main deck.

For all the headline-making of the top speed, this is still a yacht with a warm and welcoming heart. The interior, by Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design, is a relaxed affair, with generally light fabrics and woods throughout. The yacht sleeps 12 guests, with the master suite on the main deck, and four doubles on the lower deck. There’s an additional double on the bridge deck. Guests are looked after by 16 crew.
