Launched this year by designer Ira Petromanolaki, Athens-based yacht design studio IP.YD has hit the ground running. The studio’s latest concept is i41, an ultra-modern 40.5-metre motoryacht. This is an unapologetically contemporary design, minimalist with smooth curves and a sporty silhouette.
"The first idea was to create a design with strong features that represent motion,” Ira explains. “Along the way, as the idea was evolving, it started to take the shape of a dynamic movement.” She tells SYD that while the interior plans aim to follow the same design direction, the primary focus was the ultimate comfort and overall flexibility of the spaces.
Amidships, a diagonal stripe of glass slashes the design in half, almost acting as a ‘go faster’ stripe. Like many yacht concepts, emphasis has been placed on maximising the amount of natural sunlight that reaches the interior. This is achieved through the large continuous panes of glass across the sides of i41, ensuring that every space inside will be bathed in light.
All living areas are located on the lower deck and the main deck, including the master cabin, one VIP cabin and five double guest cabins. The lower deck has been separated into three compartments: the first is the aft section with the engine room and the tender and toy garage, the second compartment houses the guest cabins and the third, located at the bow, holds the crew area. According to Ira, this layout means that these three zones can be isolated, with the separate stairways allowing for practical, discrete and private movement from one space to another. On the main deck, a spacious salon is located in the open area together with the dining room. Towards the aft, the owner’s suite has been designed with a walk-in closet, sitting area and owner’s office.
The entertainment areas will be on the upper deck along with the lounge salon and a gym that links to the sundeck area. Ira is keen for this area to be easily transformable into a dining space: “An important thing is designing a space to be flexible for all the alternatives that you can imagine for any client”.
“The beauty and the comfort of a yacht trip depend on the details of the design in every existing surface,” says Ira, who believes that innovation and high quality will be the key to making this yacht something special.
